Shakespearean Sonnets:
A Hug
A hug is how you know a friend is real
They wrap their arms around and pull you near.
And in that moment everything you feel
is shared, and there is nothing left to fear.
A hug can make the darkest day seem bright,
Or make a day already bright pure bliss.
A hug is like the dawn that ends the night,
And often it’s a prelude to a kiss.
Like home, a hug is comfortable and warm.
Like love, a hug is given full and free.
Like shelter from a fierce and raging storm,
A hug is where the heart can safely be.
Like every mother kneels to hug her child,
A hug can make this wicked world less wild.
The Perfect Home
A perfect home should be both soft and warm,
Though not concerned with perfect symmetry.
It should be strong to stand against the storm
That every home will face eventually.
A perfect home requires the perfect guard,
A father who protects his wife and young.
Although he isn’t perfect, he works hard
And in his perfect home his praise is sung.
A perfect home is beauty brought to life,
The place where all the world begins and ends.
For this it needs a mother and a wife
On her, perfection of the home depends.
And in this world where danger still exists,
In perfect homes a perfect faith persists.
Petrarchan Sonnets:
A Game of Chess in the Intriguing Night Sky
Nightfall: the town’s chromatic nocturne wakes
Dark brilliance on the river; colors drift
and tremble as enormous shadows lift
Orion to his place. The heart remakes
that peace tom in the blaze of day. Inside
your room is music, warmth and wine, the board
with chessmen set for play. The harpsichord
begins to play; delight is multiplied.
A game: the heart’s impossible ideal
To choose among a host of paths, and know
That if the kingdom crumbles, one can yield
And have the choice again. Abstract and real
Joined in their trance of thought, two players show
The calm of Gods above a troubled field.
Promise The Stars
Let’s take off in flight and race through the sky
We’ll never look down; we’ll build our own town
And like thousands of clouds we won’t touch the ground
And like hundreds of birds we’re flying high
Maybe you will follow, maybe you’ll stay
You’re the only one, I promise the stars
I’ll do anything I swear I’ll take scars
I’m praying you won’t give yourself away
With your hand in mine, we’ll soar through the night
We’ll keep our eyes closed and we won’t let go
And like space ships we’ll dance with satellites
And with the stars we’ll never be alone
Please stay with me, I promise we won’t fight
I’ll talk to you all day, even on the phone.
Explanation:
Over all of the poems that I made, I am most impressed with these four sonnets. I truly made this with all my heart and with all my knowledge of words and phrases. I know I am supposed to explain only one but I would love to explain all of them.
The first two sonnets are based on a Shakespearean rhyming scheme. The rhyming scheme is a-b-a-b c-d-c-d e-f-e-f g-g. I chose the theme a hug and a perfect home to make my first two sonnets.
My first one is about a hug. I described the feeling a person can get when they get a hug and how a hug could simply change the world. The second sonnet was about the perfect home. I was describing a perfect home where there everything is complete and in its place.
My last two sonnets are based with a Petrarchan rhyming scheme. The rhyming scheme is a-b-b-a a-b-b-a c-d-e-c-d-e or c-d-c-d-c-d. The two themes that I chose to make my two pertrachan sonnets are a game of chess and about loving someone.
My first Petrarchan sonnet is about a game of chess being played at night. I know it sounds extremely random but I was inspired by my uncle and father that was currently playing chess when I was trying to make this sonnet. At that moment, the sky was filled with stars, which was really rare so put that in the sonnet. I also described the whole situation and put it all in the sonnet. I didn’t put it all straight there I wrote it all in a poetic way and symbolized some things too. Overall, I think my sonnet was pretty good actually.
My second Petrarchan sonnet is about a person falling in love. It’s basically based on a guy who’s falling head over heels for this girl and would do anything to not let this girl get away from him. He also described the things he would do to make his relationship with her stay strong. This sonnet is not much of a sonnet (even though it is) I sort of made it in a form of a song too. You can practically sing it actually if you know the melody.
